Sport fising in Slovenia

Slovenia is one of Europe’s most water-rich countries. It is interlaced with a dense network of flowing and standing waters, while its diverse relief is adorned with natural treasures such as crystal-clear springs, waterfalls, deep gorges, and numerous natural and man-made lakes. Slovenia’s rivers are divided into two main drainage basins: the Adriatic and the Danube (Black Sea). The pride of the Danube basin is the river Sava, while the Adriatic is defined by the emerald Soča and its tributaries. Despite their proximity, the fish species in these two basins differ significantly, each boasting its own iconic representatives. The “crown jewels” of the Adriatic basin are undoubtedly the Marble trout and the Adriatic grayling, whereas the Danube basin is famed for the Huchen (Danube Salmon), Brown trout, and Grayling.

Recreational fishing is an increasingly popular pursuit in Slovenia. Anglers from all over the world are drawn to over 9,000 hectares of water surfaces, set within the unspoiled beauty of the Alpine, Pre-Alpine, and Karst landscapes. Thanks to these abundant waters and the scenic diversity of our sub-Alpine land, fishermen return to Slovenia time and time again. Though small, Slovenia is remarkably picturesque; beyond fishing, it offers a wealth of activities, making it a perfect destination for the whole family. Moreover, Slovenians are known for our warmth and hospitality, complemented by a rich culinary scene and world-class wines.

The fish populations in Slovenian rivers and lakes are remarkably diverse, consisting of 77 freshwater species. Among these, 33 species are permanently protected, while approximately 20 species are of interest for sport fishing. Average stocking densities range between 200 and 400 kilograms of fish per hectare—and even higher in many areas—which stands as a testament to excellent fisheries management. The upper reaches are primarily inhabited by Marble and Brown trout, along with their hybrids. The middle reaches are home to Grayling, Huchen, and Nase, while Chub can be found almost everywhere. In standing waters, Carp is the most popular species, while lakes and reservoirs also offer excellent fishing for Catfish, Pike, and Zander.

Sport fishing in Poljanska Sora river

The Poljanska Sora originates in the rugged, hidden ravines of the Rovte hills. Along its journey toward the town of Žiri, it is joined by numerous tributaries, transforming into a magnificent and productive fly fishing district. Throughout its 43-kilometer course, the river remains relatively accessible, offering unique opportunities and unforgettable experiences for anglers through its many meanders and deep pools. From an angler’s perspective, the Poljanska Sora is not considered a demanding river. Throughout the season, it is regarded as a classic grayling water. The trout, particularly the native Brown trout, can be somewhat more temperamental. While the Grayling typically appears downstream from Žiri, the Brown trout makes its home in the very first pools near the source.

While the resident Huchen may not reach record-breaking sizes here, the population is remarkably stable. Alongside these species, fly anglers often prize the Rainbow trout, which is known for its fighting spirit and frequently “saves the day” when other fish are less active.

In Gostilna LIPAN we are not known only for excellent fish specialties. During the fishing season we are hosting sporting fishermen from all over Europe. They are constantly returning to us deu to beauty and unspoiled nature of the Poljanska dolina and its proximity.
